We took an extensive amount of time over the last week to go over several exemplar reads on Engage NY (http://engageny.org/resource/curriculum-exemplars/). Our in depth analysis of each exemplar read helped our group to identify many key components that would identify an exemplary text to use in the classroom. In addition to the examples set forth by the exemplar texts, the following will also provide us with guidelines and criteria as we move forward in selecting information texts for close reads:

Besides recommendations from the state, we're also interested in how others in education are suggesting "how to's" for close reads. Harvard University provides many great staples to use at http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~wricntr/documents/CloseReading.html
Dr. McClennen at PSU also breaks down the task(s) in a simplified manner at http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/s/a/sam50/closeread.htm
